Former Providence Mayor Vincent A. “Buddy” Cianci Jr., now a talk show host in Rhode Island, interviewed me Thursday about my new Providence-based crime novel, Rogue Island. You can hear the interview by clicking on the link below.
It was interesting to see Buddy again. The very last story I wrote before leaving The Providence Journal for bigger things back in the 1980s was an investigative piece about massive mail-ballot fraud in one of his reelection campaigns. The story did not implicate Buddy in the chicanery, and he never took it personally.
Buddy, for those of you who don’t know about him, was one of the longest-serving mayors in U.S. history. It was he who conceived and lanuched the remarkable revitalization of downtown Providence. But he also did a four-year stretch in federal prison for racketeering conspiracy. After his release, he became the most popular radio personality in the state.
